Building a Better Bike — Activity

    Bike Designs

As a group, you must decide what type of bike to design. You can design a faster bike, a bike that is better at tricks, or a more comfortable bike. First, study the bike diagram. Then, click the links to read about each type of bike. Once you make a decision, ask your teacher for the design plans for the bike you selected.
A faster bike is more compact and lighter weight than a generic bike. The wheels are closer together, making the bike very responsive to steering and maneuvering. The top tube is longer, and most of the other bike tubes are shorter. These changes allow the rider to sit in an aerodynamic position. Weight is trimmed from the bike’s wheels, handlebars, seat, and pedals.

A freestyle bike must be responsive so the rider can perform stunts. It also must be strong to disperse weight and absorb shock. The top tube slants downward from the head tube to the seat tube, making the bike easier to straddle. The wheels are slightly smaller in diameter.

A more comfortable bike is more upright and stretched out. Some of the tubes on a comfortable bike are curved, making them slightly longer overall. Comfort can also be added by using fat tires, a soft seat, and handle bars that are more upright. Each of these features will add weight to the bike.
